Champix - Treatment
Champix is used in adults to help them quit smoking. The tablets
can only be obtained with a prescription. Smokers who are
motivated to quit smoking, and who are also receiving more
advice and support should use Champix. Patients should first set
a date when they will quit. Then they begin treatment with
champix 7 to 15 days before that date.

Treatment starts with one 0.5 mg pill daily for 3 days, this is
followed by a further 4 days where the patient takes twice one
0.5 mg tablet twice daily. From then on, the patient takes one 1
mg tablet twice daily until the end of treatment, will be
12weeks. A special pack with the exact quantities of both
strengths of tablets is available when initiating treatment. The
dose may be reduced to 0.5 mg twice a day in patients who do not
bear the 1 mg twice-daily dose. Patients who are having severe
problems with their kidneys should take champix as 1 mg once
daily. At the end of the 12 weeks, in patients who stopped
smoking, doctors may choose to carry on treatment for another 12
weeks. They may also choose to stop the medicine progressively.
The medicine is swallowed whole with water and they can be taken
with or without food. Some people may find that when they stop
taking this medicine their urge to smoke again. They may also
feel short-tempered, depressed or have difficulty sleeping. To
avoid this, you may consider reducing your dose slowly when you
finish treatment with this medicine, rather than stop taking
medicine abruptly.
